Silver-ized Bird Nest

I didn't even have to come up with the idea myself.  My smarty pants friend Vicki came up with this one for me... she's a mental health saver.

I found this abandoned bird nest in my yard.  Except for the fact that is was falling apart -- it was perfect.
I drizzled hot glue all over the back side to stabilize it...

and coated it with several hundred coats of silver spray paint.  The more, the better.

It couldn't have been easier.
Okay, there was the unfortunate demise of a favorite sock I tossed over the light bulb to soften the light in the photos....

There is no word in the English language to describe the smell of a burning dirty sock.

  6. Very neat idea. I have a nest I found on a walk too. It can be seen in my header photo on my blog. Never thought of painting it - guess I'll keep it as it is for now - since it's nice and tight and not falling apart.

  23. What a great idea! I find bird nests every year and use them as is, but they always fall apart and seem a little dirty, if you know what I mean. This is a great way to preserve them and make them pretty too. Thanks for sharing and your sock disaster was too funny. Had a good laugh.

  31. This is so clever. I have been looking at an abandoned nest in a tree, so I think I'll just have to climb it. Thanks for the inspiration!

  32. I never would have thought to paint a nest, as I usually go for the natural look. However, I love how this silver one blends into your decor.

I hate to ask, but since I've seen people using real nests all over blogland. Are these things safe to use? I've always been told not to touch a real bird's nest for the diseases and such that birds carry. Not trying to be nasty by asking, but I am truly curious since everyone uses them if these things are safe to use or if you girls are doing something to them or something to make them usable.

  55. I would have never thought to spray paint a bird's nest and I'm a spray paint wonder; I spray paint everything it seems. A friend of mine has several bird's nests, but I keep thinking of bugs and stuff and she didn't glue her's together so they do fall apart; I can't wait for her to see what you've done here. And the sock -- was a kick in the batootie of a smile -- I'm off in search of a bird's nest.
