It's Time to Accessorize - Day 5

I've noticed fellow bloggers change things around in their homes a lot.  They move things here and there, add and take away, stage this and then that.  Holidays?  I'm not even sure they know when they're in the right house.

I say this as a compliment, in admiration -- however dizzy it might make me. I think that was one of the things that drew me to blogging.  I want to learn to do this, too.

Until now, I subscribed to the "there's only one best way to do something" method of decorating....otherwise, why would it be called "best" at all?  I'd arrange things the best I could and there it would stay.  Forever, or until we moved.
I'm almost always doing something but seldom ever changing anything.

Here in my dining room I'm trying out the new me.  It's time
to add some new ( or new to me) accessories.

I started with a $1 shell and a wooden candle stick I'd held on to but hadn't used in years.   The candle stick has had at least nine lives.  It's been stained light oak,
painted white, painted black, faux marblized (what was I thinking?, hello,  it's still wood...),
sponged, etc. -- you get the idea.
And now, I think this is my favorite so far, it's been SHELLED.
Oh, yeah.

I can't even impress you with how I did it cuz there was nothing to it.
Glue it. Paint it. Glaze it.

"That's it", I say as I wipe the sweat from my brow.
"Do I still get to call this a tutorial?"

I think I need a nap now.

P.S.  My friend, Rosie (turned proofreader), says this is the ugliest thing she's ever seen.  Anyone out there need work?

  3. I think you can call anything you want a tutorial.(-: Did you do the painting? Very nice! It's fun to mix it up once in a while.

  4. Lindy! Yeahhhhh! You did it! I think you produced a tutorial! It looks great and I love the picture that is hanging behind there. You did a wondeful job. I'll come see you when I am ready for a face lift!

When I was first married I used to be the same way...I would put things one way and leave them forever. Then I met a wonderful friend (we are still best friends after all these years) and she changed her house around weekly. She was also crafty and creative...and I learned a lot from her.

Now I like to change things around and enjoy the freshness it brings to my house and my life.

Good job-It is hard to break out of old patterns....now if I could only move my washing machine next to my bathroom where all the towels seem to come from... Hugs- Diana

  5. Very pretty, and congrats to you for stepping out and changing things up! I'm one of those crazy people that decorates for the various holidays and is constantly changing things around...I think it's a sickness, hehe!

  6. You crack me up. Until recently, I never moved things around or changed things either. I am glad to know I am not the only one.

The shell-stick turned out really neat.

  7. You should see my Great Aunt's house. Even she admits her house has been exactly the same for the last 30 years at least. It was an event when she finally took her old drapes down and bought new ones. LOL

Very nice candlestick. I have so many that I'm not using now and always trying to come up with something to do with them.

  8. I think the painting -- which is terrific -- sets the mood for the vignette and you've done a great job with it. It's funny in my house. In some places I move things around a lot -- in others just leave it alone. I'm really happy, f.ex. with my mantel so I don't change that. I also one who doesn't enjoy seasonal decorating bah humbug.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving such a nice comment.

  23. I love the clever, the whimsical, and the ingenuity of what many would call "ugly." LOL And your little project fits all of those descriptions.... I really like it!
I have to admit I am one of those who changes things up in my house all the time. Parts of vignettes are moved from one room to the next and I decorate for the seasons and the holidays. And yup, it's a lot of work. I sometimes question why I do it, but it's an advertisement of sorts for my work and it does give me a sense of self satisfaction. My BIL used to say I could operate a store out of my house and still have backstock!
Keep up the good work and the fun ideas.

  32. Thank you for sharing your tute on A Crafty Soiree and yes, it's totally a tute and you need to take credit for it! I am glad you posted this because I love the idea to add things other than candles on top of holders. What a fun idea, and I also like how told us that you've used it several different ways. I love when people think outside the box and change what they have on hand to fit their current needs. I hope you'll come back next week and link up again!

I totally agree, I don't know how some of these gals do it! I do change out my decor for the seasons usually but then it remains that way till the next season, etc. Some of these ladies change things every week...I really do stand in awe! I think I just need more energy! Hehe! Thank you so much for joining Sunday Favorites this week!
