I Finished theTrompe L'oeil Grandfather Clock!

I'm done.  

My Pier 1 inspired Trompe L'oeil Grandfather Clock is finished--I thought I'd never say those words...


Isn't he handsome?


He's barely 2" deep but stands a whopping 6'6"!






Here's my inspiration.




And here's the process in pictures...

The pattern was drawn and cut from poster board -- he's 6'6" so it took several pieces. Well, half a pattern anyway.  I just flipped it over for the other half.

A dear friend gave me this piece of 3/8" exterior bead board.  I used a Sharpie to trace around the pattern.



This part takes a while.  You can't get in a hurry cutting it out.



A Mouse sander does a great job of sanding the edges.





The wood trim came from my scrap pile.



I mixed several left over paints and came up with this creamy green.


A $1.29 Goodwill find gives it some needed dimension.


Add to that a $10 clock from the Dollar Store and I think I've got a pretty grand clock here.

    I think he's very handsome! Going to feature this on the ole blog! I saw this in country living and thought wow, that's so doable. Of course, your painting skills make it look a LOT better than I ever could!

    Oh wow! you did a fantastic job!
    I was just looking at the clocks at the Dollar Store the other day thinking...' I need a LARGER clock for the living room' but didn't buy one cause well, I just didn't.
    But this makes me want one now! So I can make a copy of YOUR COPY!!! LOL... that is the highest form of flattery right?

    I just can't do the trompe l'oeil painting though.
    I've seen some others doing this same thing...they all turn out different, huh?

    I saw this clock in the Pier 1 catalog and made a trip down to my local store to check it out. I thought it looked really cheap & not at all worth the money. I think you've done a wonderful job and it's so much nicer than the one at Pier 1. You should be very proud! :)

    Second, what an amazing coincidence! I just saw your very inspiration clock at Pier 1 last night. Swooned and HAD to paint one!! I snapped some pics with my phone and have been brainstorming all day. I googled trump de l'oeil grandfather clocks and voila!! There you were!! Now I'm even more excited to this project... you are amzing! I hope mine turns out half as good as yours!

    Hi Lindy, I have a fast question for you about the clock face.
    BUT FIRST!!! Can I just say to you that you did an amazing job here and you are an inspiration to follow.
    OK now how did you attach the clock to the body piece? I am scared that I will get it all together and but the clock won't stay in place. Did you attach it in any particular way? Can we get a picture?

    Carolyn,
    I positioned the clock face and drew a line all the way around. I removed the clock and I used a bead of liquid nail just inside the line and replace the face. I used a bag of rice to hold it all in place until it dried...good luck to you!!!
