Put A (Vintage) Bird On It

Two things I love (along with those I'm related to and that cute guy I married) are anything with a bird on it and everything vintage.  Hang around my blog very long and I'll prove it to ya.

I've managed to do both for this post.  Twice.
If I were being graded on my ability to feed my fetish I'd have a 4.0 GPA for sure.

First, there's the baby diaper set I made for my sweet nephew's expected baby boy.  I used a vintage pattern, recycled mens dress shirts, and a cute little bird applique. A+, since I'm grading myself...

Then, there's my new apron with, yes, a bird on it. The fabric is awesome.  It looks vintage but isn't.  I found it on the remnant table at Hancock's for $5 a yard and loved it so much I haven't wanted to cut into it.  I think I'll give myself another A+ just for being brave enough to take a whack at it.

 Tips for Upcycling Clothes
  • Go with the flow.  Use the details already there.  It'll add character without the work.
  • Use spray fabric sizing before sewing. The extra body makes it easier to sew and the fabric has a nice, crisp finish.

  • Double check all buttons to make sure they are secure, especially when making children's clothes.

A friend of my daughter's shared this YouTube video with me.  It's just too stupid (and funny) not to pass along...

I get the message.  Feel free to subtract a few points for this one.  I desire it.

  10. Both of those projects are just darling. LOVE the little boy outfit and your apron is darling. What is it that makes us dread cutting into a piece of fabric? I think it is because once we start we know we are captured by that project and the all the dreams of what we COULD DO with that particular piece of fabric are no longer dreams. Great post- xo Diana

  22. The birds are sweet-but what I'm really impressed with is your use of recycled materials. I personally like to make bowls and beads out of old magazines. i love your little flowers you made from magazines.

  27. You are a girl after my owe heart!!
I love it that you take the time to sew a special outfit for your nephew. But using recycled fabric-who would think of that?
Pioneer women, that's who. Didn't they use flour sacks and outgrown clothes for quilts. Also recycled fabrics for rugs.
Well, I could go on and on! I really enjoyed your post and will visit again!

  29. I love your comment about loving a fabric so much that you don't want to cut into it. My college-age daughter asked me to patch a pair of cutoff shorts with a fat quarter of fabric I hearted so much I was "saving" it for who knows what. After I cut into it, I quickly used more of it for another few projects. I loved the feeling of "release." I need to do that more often.
BTW, I subscribe to your blog through Google Reader. Is it better to be a follower? Does it matter which I do?
    Thanks.
