Trunk Love

I'm not saying it was ugly, exactly, because at one time I was deeply and madly in love with this little trunk.  But now?  Well, let's just say the relationship was on the rocks,  a legal separation was in the works and  I was moving on -- looking for something new to fill the
empty spot in my heart living room.

Before

So what would the perfect replacement look like?

Well, after scouring the thrift stores looking for something in need of a face lift that would fit my needs (and cost me nearly nothing) I would probably have come up with something like this.....

That's right.  The answer, with a little tweaking, was right there all along.

I removed most of the studs, sanded off as much of the painting as I could, and stained the entire piece heavily.  Using painters tape, the new won't pull everything off kind, I taped off the stripes and painted them antique gold letting some of the stain come through.
In this case -- sloppy was good.

After

After some serious counseling (for me, not the trunk) we're now back together and doing well...

  7. Doesn't it feel great using what you have and just revamping it? I find myself doing it more and more...why buy new when there are thrift stores, why shop at thrift stores when people give me cool things, why accumulate more stuff when what I have might just serve the purpose.

  15. Hi, Lindy, thanks for stopping by & chiming in on that post. It was fun to read the comments on that one &I think lots of us struggle with comparing & seeing things we love in blogland, but don't necessarily want to change our homes to go that direction. The point was to simply be true to yourself & I hope that is what we all do.\
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  17. Enjoyed your allegory, of sorts. But, I must say, you may have gotten the counseling, but Trunk had to be willing to make some major changes in his life.
It really is pretty now, I'm glad you were courageous to re-do it. It's hard to paint over something that we once enjoyed so much. I can think of several things that I gave away when really I should have just repainted them.
    Hugs, Cindy
