Make your own decorative Cutting Board

I have a weakness for the patina of old wood.

I don’t recall where I got the piece of wood... I'd hung on to it with the idea of making this cutting board.  It had to be old (and not JUST dirty) because it was a full inch thick - unlike the ¾ inch thick
1 inch boards you find today.

It had nail holes and stains to die for.  For obvious reasons, I only use this for decoration and not for food prep - I don’t
really prep much food, anyway.

It was simple (raise your hand if you hate to hear me use that word) to make. I folded a piece of printer paper in half to make a pattern, cutting a little away at the time. Then I opened it up to check until I got the shape I wanted.

After tracing it onto the wood I used my jig-saw to cut it out, my drill to add a hole in the handle and my sander to smooth it.

This was slow going due to the thickness of the board but I resisted looking around for a dirty ¾ inch piece…

All that was left was to rub it down with a little tung oil to bring out all its great flaws.  Charming, huh?  Here are some other ways I've used this old cutting board…

This cutting board has been around the block.
I mean that in a good way....

  1. Lindy-that is just darling! I have an old one that is cut out in a pig pattern that belonged to MyHero's grandmother. It is still my favorite cutting board only I don't use it anymore either. I love all the ways you showcased yours. Diana

  11. Very nice and adds so much charm.(-: My oldest cutting board was picked up in a woodlot in Morocco by the maid when we were living there. It was never very pretty but I am sentimentally attached to it and still have it although I don't use it much anymore.(-:

  22. Oh what a gorgeous first link. That means the Bragfest party will be a GREAT success. Thank you so much, Lindy!

The idea of making one's own cutting board would NEVER have occurred to me. Once again you have proven that you think outside the box and it demonstrates your extremely rare and unique talent.

It's beautiful -- you're right, the patina is perfect. You've also put together the most inviting vignettes in your pictures. Thank you so much for sharing your project on the Boardwalk Bragfest!
