Vintage Cup O' Joe


My husband and I drink perked coffee.  No fancy Starbucks brew for us.  We take ours the old-fashioned way. 


So, we were really irked this morning when our second new percolator in less than two years bit the dust. Fifty-six dollars, times two, down the drain.  They sure don't make 'em like they used to.



Lucky for us, I'd found this sixty-something year old percolator a month or so ago.  I think I paid $10 for it.  I had been too nervous to plug it up.  I never really thought it would work, anyway, I just thought it was cute.  



However, desperate times call for desperate measures. 

A morning without coffee is like....
 Well, I can't even answer that until after my coffee.   



We plugged her in.  Expecting what?  Sparks and an explosion, maybe?  I was just thinking, please let the fire be small. 








 I really wasn't expecting a hot cup o' joe.
But, that's just what we got.  It was great.  She's hired.

    That's a GREAT find! I used to have one like that, then I made it into a lamp...and sold it. Probably should have tried it for coffee first :-)! Deb

    LOL! Yes, I picked up a pretty little ceramic plugger inner and my DH loved it! (I dislike coffee) Unfortunately, it started falling apart and we had to get rid of it. When the power went out, 7 years ago, on Christmas morning, my DH dug out our top-of-the-stove pot, kept for such emergencies, and brewed it here, taking it over to the coffee hounds at my parents' next door. A lot of "good coffee" remarks were made, although they may have been a shade influenced by waiting. :)

    Your post makes me think of the older workers of our nation, Lindy! Sometimes you gotta go with the old timers to get the job done, where the "young ones" seem to not be able to hold up under the responsibilities of their jobs. : ) It was neat to see your percolator coffeepot. My Mom had one when I was a kid and I haven't seen one in a long time!

    It probably makes great coffee too! I love the gently used look of old appliances. I used my grandmothers old toaster from the same time period as your peculator for years. If it stops working I have an old corning coffee pot.

    Glad the old standby worked for you, I dont drink coffee I just love to smell it and I love to hear it making in a percolater. You should see the lamp that Gail @ My repurposed life just made out of one of these. Really cool.

    Hilarious!!! I've been looking at some of these on ebay because I just can't stand looking at my same ol' same ol' comtemporary coffee maker anymore. Surrounded by vintage items on a pretty silver platter it just looks ridiculous. I'm just hoping to find one that makes more than 8 cups.

    Love this----and I have a love/hate relationship with my coffee maker too....mine just bit the dust. Luckily I had an unused Gevalia (Christmas gift) sitting in the basement. But this is much more elegant and I am sure the coffee tastes much better too!

    I absolutely love this! I want one now. I love the spout in those retro ones as oppose to the carafes we use these days that always seem to drip - even if they so they're dripless. Visiting you from Time Travel Thursday. Can I come over and have a cup of coffee?? :)

    I love it! I used to use a stovetop percolator, and now I use a Kwik Drip pot from the 30s. You can see pics of it on my blog. So many people think we're nuts for using percs/drip pots, but they make such a better cup of coffee.

    Somehow, I just knew your older percolator would give good service. It is significant how its quality remains after many years, while your newer versions fell apart, each too soon! Hope she'll not be ready to put out to lamp pasture anytime soon!
