My husband and I drink perked coffee. No fancy Starbucks brew for us. We take ours the old-fashioned way.
So, we were really irked this morning when our second new percolator in less than two years bit the dust. Fifty-six dollars, times two, down the drain. They sure don't make 'em like they used to.
Lucky for us, I'd found this sixty-something year old percolator a month or so ago. I think I paid $10 for it. I had been too nervous to plug it up. I never really thought it would work, anyway, I just thought it was cute.
However, desperate times call for desperate measures.
A morning without coffee is like....
Well, I can't even answer that until after my coffee.
We plugged her in. Expecting what? Sparks and an explosion, maybe? I was just thinking, please let the fire be small.
I really wasn't expecting a hot cup o' joe.
But, that's just what we got. It was great. She's hired.

Sometimes, an old gal is really the best girl for the situation. I dig her, call her Joanne :)
ReplyDeleteHow 'bout that?! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a GREAT find! I used to have one like that, then I made it into a lamp...and sold it. Probably should have tried it for coffee first :-)! Deb
ReplyDeleteLOL! Yes, I picked up a pretty little ceramic plugger inner and my DH loved it! (I dislike coffee) Unfortunately, it started falling apart and we had to get rid of it. When the power went out, 7 years ago, on Christmas morning, my DH dug out our top-of-the-stove pot, kept for such emergencies, and brewed it here, taking it over to the coffee hounds at my parents' next door. A lot of "good coffee" remarks were made, although they may have been a shade influenced by waiting. :)
ReplyDeleteYay! Good for you and your percolator is a looker! So glad she works too.
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
shelia ;)
Isn't it amazing how much longer the old things last? Your perculator looks really good on that silver tray!
ReplyDeleteHope you will please drop by and enter my $50 Overstock.com Gift Card Giveaway!! Hometalk has said if I get 500 entries, they will increase the Gift Card to $100.

Your post makes me think of the older workers of our nation, Lindy! Sometimes you gotta go with the old timers to get the job done, where the "young ones" seem to not be able to hold up under the responsibilities of their jobs. : ) It was neat to see your percolator coffeepot. My Mom had one when I was a kid and I haven't seen one in a long time!
ReplyDeleteOh Cool!
ReplyDeleteI had one of those a few years back and it finally did quit. I hated that. I have a new model now. But sure do miss my old timey one!
Enjoy the java, Pat
I am envious and totally on the look out now! My coffee maker is such and eyesore.
ReplyDeleteHow much fun is this and it is very elegant too.
ReplyDeleteSometimes old, tried and true is better! How fun to have a working vintage percolator!
ReplyDeleteYvonne
Oh how cool!!! I remember my parents having one of those and knowing them they probably still do :)
ReplyDeleteyou must really love your coffee if all you can think is please let the fire be small before you plug it in.
ReplyDeleteFrom one coffee lover to another, she's a beauty!
ReplyDeleteMany Blessings,
Melissa
I have a backup too, just in case. I think your find has earned her keep. Debi
ReplyDeleteI love that vintage coffee pot! Looks great on your counter.
ReplyDeleteIt probably makes great coffee too! I love the gently used look of old appliances. I used my grandmothers old toaster from the same time period as your peculator for years. If it stops working I have an old corning coffee pot.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Perked coffee always smells so wonderful in the morning. I wish we still had one instead of the drip one. Enjoy,
ReplyDeleteBabs
And she is beautiful!! Me...I love me my Keurig!! Fresh up of joe whenever I want. No overheated coffee for me any more!! Sigh!! Can you say BLISS!!??
ReplyDeleteHugs
SueAnn
...and she looks so good! Robx
ReplyDeleteGlad the old standby worked for you, I dont drink coffee I just love to smell it and I love to hear it making in a percolater. You should see the lamp that Gail @ My repurposed life just made out of one of these. Really cool.
ReplyDeleteToo funny! Check out my post today.
ReplyDeletegail
That's just one of the MANY reasons I like vintage, Lindy - it was meant to last. By the way, it makes a really cute lamp. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's good to have you back at the party. I've missed your wonderful projects. Hope you'll join me each week.

"Please let the fire be small"
ReplyDeleteHilarious!!! I've been looking at some of these on ebay because I just can't stand looking at my same ol' same ol' comtemporary coffee maker anymore. Surrounded by vintage items on a pretty silver platter it just looks ridiculous. I'm just hoping to find one that makes more than 8 cups.
great post.
lol, I love how you think. I wouldn't have thought to try it.
ReplyDeleteLove that coffee pot!
How brave you are to plug it in and give it a go... and to get some Joe! Love the lamp, too.
ReplyDeleteLove this----and I have a love/hate relationship with my coffee maker too....mine just bit the dust. Luckily I had an unused Gevalia (Christmas gift) sitting in the basement. But this is much more elegant and I am sure the coffee tastes much better too!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this! I want one now. I love the spout in those retro ones as oppose to the carafes we use these days that always seem to drip - even if they so they're dripless. Visiting you from Time Travel Thursday. Can I come over and have a cup of coffee?? :)
ReplyDeleteI love it! I used to use a stovetop percolator, and now I use a Kwik Drip pot from the 30s. You can see pics of it on my blog. So many people think we're nuts for using percs/drip pots, but they make such a better cup of coffee.
ReplyDeleteSomehow, I just knew your older percolator would give good service. It is significant how its quality remains after many years, while your newer versions fell apart, each too soon! Hope she'll not be ready to put out to lamp pasture anytime soon!
ReplyDelete;)
Rose
What a great idea! It looks fantastic! You are so creative! Thanks for sharing:)
ReplyDeleteHope to see you on my blog:)
How cool that it still works! Can you explain a little how a percolator works?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great find! You are so lucky!

ReplyDeleteI am visiting via Romantic Homes. What a wonderful coffee pot.
ReplyDeleteHave a happy weekend!
I drink coffee every morning and now you've made me want to get a percolator.
ReplyDeleteOh very cool! I love the lamp idea too! Squeel! Please come by and show this off at my VIP party today =) http://designergarden.blogspot.com/2011/07/vip-party-21.html
ReplyDeleteYeah! I'm glad there was no fire! ;) Love the lamp look for it as well! Adorable.
ReplyDeleteOh how cute ~ and it works!!
ReplyDeleteHa! I have the same pot, it was my MIL's, only it has no innards, darn it!
ReplyDeleteMy mom still uses her old percolator. Make a pretty good cup of coffee too!
