Magazine Cabinet

I promised in my last post to share the fate of a pair of doors
( the only things to survive the His and Hers Bathroom reno)
from the original linen closet.

I love louvered doors.  Just not in my bathroom because I'm a good southern girl who does my part to keep hairspray companies
in the black.  Hairspray, shower steam and louvered
doors? -- a recipe for disaster in my cookbook so I saved
the doors for another day.

You can get more info on the Loveseat and TV tray here.

Then, how to use them?

I built this cabinet for my magazine storage.  It's built from 1x10's so it's shallow enough to fit in the corner behind my recliner, just right for my magazines and a perfect way to recycle the doors.

I moved the chair to get a better picture.

I distressed the new wood to match the old doors.  I used leftover bathroom paint for the base color, dry brushed everything with leftover kitchen paint and sanded the edges a little.

Here's a look at the "during".

I thought I'd also give you a peek at a little trunk in the room my uncle and I built together.  We built it to "fit" the space and for extra storage.

I'm all about extra storage!

  2. Hi Lindy,

You did great with your doors and that cabinet. And, I so am with you about the hairspray. My kids think it's horrible. I am an 80's girl also from the south, so the hairspray is just a gimme.

  10. Wow! Great job on that cabinet and the side piece too! You did a wonderful job!!!! I love those old louvered doors and am just sick that I left a pair for $5.00 because my daughter didn't want to juggle the car around to fit them. I should have beat her- instead I have been beating myself up ever since. Hugs- Diana

  11. I love that you have a cupboard devoted just to magazines! I know they can quickly take over a house. Your chest that you built with your uncle is fantastic!

  17. I love your magazine cabinet. I need one of those. Hmmm I see a Christmas break project for the carpenter (aka my son). He'll be so busy with the projects I have for him I doubt he'll be able to return. I also love that little trunk. You're amazing. You should move closer to me so you can motivate me to get things done. ;O) My best friend is awesome but she's a quilter and not a decorator which is great for completing quilts just not getting house projects done.
I forgot to tell you how much I loved your tile job of his and hers. Super duper great.
    Have a great weekend, Lindy.

  30. Both pieces are very nice, but I love the little cabinet. Love the shutters and the color. Looks like that's a great place for all your magazines. Stupid me sold most of my older decorating magazines in a yard sale when I had this insane moment of wanting to get rid of all the clutten in the house. Oh well, some woman in the neighborhood bought them all for a quarter each, which made her very happy. I recently bought some shutters and have a specific project for them if I can get around to it. Hopefully my idea will look just as good as yours.

Hope you're having a great week!

  37. Brilliant! I love the size, and great colour and distressing. I need at least three of those great narrow cabinets. I can think of lots of spaces in our home that would look great with a tall slim piece like that. Now I need to find some louvered doors. Thanks for sharing.
